Gogoşi (Romanian doughnuts)


"Gogoşi" are basic Romanian doughnuts easy to find in almost every grandma's kitchen from our country. They can be either simple or filled with various jams, and their dough is always yeast-raised. They are fried in vegetable oil, on the stove or even in the oven sometimes, drained on paper towels and then generously dusted with powder sugar. If you decide to try them, you're in for a fluffy, fluffy treat. A treat from the deepest childhood of most Romanians. Sort of like a fairytale snack. :) Enjoy!

Four years ago: baby making and no cooking. :)




Ingredients:
  • 500 g flour
  • 25 g fresh yeast
  • 150 ml warm milk
  • 70 g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons rum
  • 5 tablespoons sunflower oil, plus extra to fry
  • pinch of salt
  • about 30 g vanilla powder sugar to dust
  • optional: a few tablespoons of jam to fill (flavor of your choice)

Put the flour in a large bowl and mix the salt in it. Make a well in the center.
Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk, with a tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit until bubbly, then gradually mix it in the flour. Also add the 2 beaten eggs, previously mixed with the rum. Also add the remaining sugar and the oil. Mix everything into a smooth and elastic dough (it will take about 5 minutes of kneading time). Cover the dough with a dishcloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for an hour or until doubled in size.

Remove it from the bowl and punch it down onto a work surface. Roll it until it's about 1 cm thick and cut circles from it using a juice glass or a coffee mug (you will get about 8-10).
If you're making them filled, then spread the jam on on circle and cover with another circle, pressing the edges to close it. If you're making them simple, then just leave them be.
Put the circles aside on a tray and let them rise for another hour or so until really puffed up.

Heat the oil in a deep pan and fry them in batches, about 2-3 minutes per each side. Remove and let drain on paper towels. Dust with vanilla-flavored powder sugar and serve most of them warm. It's done, dig in! :)
