File Marajoara (Brazilian Steak with melted cheese)

This is a delicious way to cook thin beef steaks the Brazilian way: marinated in garlic oil, fried, topped with melted cheese and accompanied by crispy potato slices. We made it in no time and ate it in something like five minute tops. The feel of your cutlery sinking in this special steak and the way it prefigures what the mouth-feel of it will be like is almost like the too-much-talked-about sensation of butterflies-in-your-stomach.
Even I loved it and I'm not even a fan of red meat. Bogdan adored it. Enjoy :)

Last year: another kind of bun in the oven and taking a break from cooking :)

Ingredients (serves 2):
  • 2 very thin beef steaks (200 g total)
  • 60 g mozzarella cheese (2 thick slices; about 1/2 of a round)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 50 ml olive oil
  • 1 large russet potato
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon minced cilantro

Place 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil in a bowl. Slice the garlic and add it:

Put the beef steaks in in and turn them to coat all over. Also sprinkle with the cilantro:

Let them marinate until you finish with the rest.
Heat the rest of the oil in a pan and thinly slice the potato (unpeeled). Fry the slices, sprinkled with salt and pepper, until crisp:

Remove the potato slices from the pan when done and replace with the steaks (discarding the cloves from the marinade). Fry them for 2 minutes on each side.

Turn heat to low, top each slice of steak with the mozzarella and cover pan with a lid:

Let the cheese melt for 2-3 minutes from the heat. Transfer to serving plates and serve immediately, along with the potato slices. It's done, dig in! :)
