Vanilla extract

Every-time you see "vanilla extract" listed as an ingredient in our recipes, know that it's very easy (and about 50 times cheaper) to make your own right at home. And here's how. :)

Last year: A different kind of bun in the oven (and no cooking due to continuous morning sickness).

Ingredients:
  • 250 ml vodka
  • 2 vanilla beans, a bit sliced lengthwise (but not all the way)

Fill a pretty little bottle or jar with the vodka (use cheaper one and keep the more expensive one for cocktails). Add the vanilla beans. Close the bottle and let it mature for 2-3 weeks (it will darken in color). After that time, you may pour a little in every recipe that needs it (don't discard the beans from the bottle). It should keep well at room temperature (and away from direct sunlight) for 6-8 months. Happy baking! :)

  1. Hi, I make my own vanilla extract too. Just some tips to share with you. Shake the bottle every few days and keep in a cool dark place. Best to use after 3 months.

Dry the used vanilla pod, put in the castor sugar to make vanilla sugar.

You can use Rum too, taste much better than vodka.

    Have a nice day, regards.

    1. Hi, thanks for the tips. We already do the thing with the sugar, bu the idea to make a rum-vanilla extract sounds delicious. We'll sure give a try! :)
