Red onion and chili bhajis with mint-garlic raita (Indian)


Bhaji is a generic term for Indian fried snacks. Here, the bhajis are made from red onion and chili, with a spicy chickpea flour batter, and they're served alongside a mint-based raita (yogurt dipping sauce). If you're a fan of Indian food, this is the thing to make on a relaxed afternoon. :). Best enjoyed with friends.

Four years ago: Tortilla de patatas (Spanish potato omelette) with parsley and fennel and Red wine pears with Camembert.



Ingredients (serves 2):
  • 2 red onions
  • 100 g gram flour (chickpea flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons curry paste or powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (or one chili, finely chopped)
  • a pinch of salt
  • 150 ml cold water
  • vegetable oil for frying
For the raita:
  • 150 g natural yogurt
  • 1 small garlic clove
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh mint
  • salt and pepper to taste

Put the gram flour, baking powder, salt, curry and chili powders in a large bowl.

Add the cold water and mix well until an even batter forms.

Peel the onions. Slice one and chop the other one finely. Add them to the batter.

Mix well. Heat the oil in a deep pan and drop spoonfuls of onion mix in it.

Fry them for 3-4 minutes on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining onion mix until all the bhajis are fried.
For the raita, crush the garlic and mix everything in a small bowl.
It's done, dig in :)
