Cheddar and oat scones (British)

Crunchy oat scones with a mild cheddar flavor, great to serve in salty combinations (with yogurt, buttermilk, chutneys, cold cuts, soups and so on). With only 5 minutes prep time and only 15 minutes baking time, you can prepare this simple treat anytime you like. Enjoy :)

Last year: Mexican rice with vegetables (vegan).
Two years ago: Sweet potato and prosciutto starters.

Ingredients (makes 12-13, enough for a regular sized baking tray):
  • 200 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder or soda
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 50 g butter at room temperature
  • 25 g oats (oat flakes, also called rolled oats)
  • 75 g grated Cheddar cheese (a sharper variety, preferably)
  • 150 ml full-fat milk

Preheat oven to 220 degrees C. Mix the flour with the salt and baking powder in a large bowl. Add the cubed butter and rub it in the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the grated cheese:

Also add the oats.

Gradually stir in the milk until the dough comes together and everything seems evenly mixed. Form little scones out of it and put them on a baking paper-lined tray:

Bake them in the pre-heated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they look golden and done.

Allow them to cool a bit and they're done. Dig in! :)
